The rest of the story

Let me be very clear about this post.  It is my story.  My personal experience.  It is not a statement about your life.  I cannot imagine fighting anxiety and depression all the time.  I recognize that there are hormonal and chemical imbalances that cause major problems.  Please know that I don't judge you or think I have reached some super spiritual place.  I am just testifying to the freedom I found this time.  Hear my heart.

June 2013...I was visiting with a dear friend of mine.  We had babies at the same time in 2007 and even stayed across the hall from each other at the hospital.  We were discussing the terrible, awful experience of postpartum blues.  These were my exact words to her, "If I found out I was pregnant tomorrow, I would already be dreading the first couple weeks postpartum."

Two days later...on Father's Day...I found out I was expecting baby E.  I was true to my word, anytime I thought of my baby's impending birth day my stomach hurt at the idea of the two weeks after.  I would choke back the tears and tell EJ, "I don't want to feel that way again."

Let me back up...

I have always wanted children.  I just knew I was supposed to be a mommy.  We experienced a couple of years of infertility.  When B was on the way, I was more than ready.  

B's birth was difficult for me.  Nothing went as planned and I felt defeated that I had a c-section birth.  I labored for 12 hours before the surgery was required and I was in sorry shape.  I was exhausted and drugged out of my mind.  To add insult to injury I learned I would never produce enough breast milk to feed my baby.  I would always have to supplement. 

Praise God my baby was born healthy and in the grand scheme of things all was well.

Grammy was here and stayed a couple weeks after his birth.  I remember being overwhelmed and tired but it wasn't until Grammy left that I lost it.  EJ remembers coming home to find me sitting on the floor holding a tiny baby B sobbing my eyes out.  He didn't know what to do, so he packed me and the baby into the car and headed to his parent's house.  I couldn't hide the tears.  I just continued to sob as we headed into their house.  I remember my father-in-law saying to my mother-in-law, "Is this normal?"  She calmly replied that it was normal and proceeded to love on me.

When EJ took me to the doctor for my 2 week check up he wouldn't let me leave there until I confessed to our doctor that I was crying.  All the time.  It was clear that I had postpartum depression.  I had never experienced anything like that in my life.  It was so defeating.  Dr. K. recommended an antidepressant and I gladly took it for three months.  Life was so much better and I was fine after I weaned off.

When I found out I was expecting W, I was terrified of feeling that way again.  I asked my doctor if they could just put an antidepressant in my IV after delivery this time.  I was sort of serious.  He did start me on it while still at the hospital.  Unfortunately, it doesn't kick in for a while so I had to experience a week or so of the misery.  Same story, it worked great and I weaned off it after a few months.

While pregnant with Lil' Ruthie, I knew it was coming.  It felt like a stalker just waiting for me.  My heart would beat faster just thinking about it.  Even though it had been five years between W's birth and Lil' Ruthie's impending birth I could still remember the terrible feelings.  This time I had done some research.  I learned that baby blues would let up by about 2 weeks or so.  I was determined to gut it out and see if I could get passed that 2 week point.  I didn't want to be on medication if I could avoid it.

You can't tell from the pictures.  Most likely you wouldn't even know if you came to visit me during that time.  (unless you are my sweet friend E who knew my history and got buckets of tears when she stopped by)  I could function.  I knew I loved my baby girl and all my other blessings.  Grammy was there and she was taking care of me and the kiddos while I healed.  I knew we would all get through it.

I would wake up in the mornings feeling like everything was going to be okay.  As the day passed, the feelings of anxiety and sadness would creep over me.  I felt like I couldn't really enjoy anything.  Also, for some reason I would get a dark cloud of emotions every time I nursed during those first two weeks or so.  If you know anything about a newborn, you know that they nurse all the time.

My anxiety was centered around the baby's safety.  The SIDS campaign strives to teach parents about safe sleeping.  I can respect teaching common sense parenting skills.  However, for someone like me, the aggressive SIDS campaign in our hospital at that time caused my anxiety to heighten to a crazy level.  Instead of feeling free to use my Mommy intuition I was overwhelmed with thoughts of something happening to her.

I felt anxious when I was alone.  If it got too quiet, I felt panicked.  By bed time EJ would find me sitting in our bed, nursing lil' Ruthie and sobbing my eyes out.  He would kiss the top of my head and say, "I am so sorry honey."  I would say, "I am sorry too.  I don't want to be feel like this.  I hate it."

The days came and went.  I just kept putting one foot in front of the other.  I cried when I needed to cry.  I was so thankful for the help and encouragement from my family.  I hoped it would get easier as the days went by.  It did.  By two weeks, I felt like I was going to be just fine.  Praise God!

Now we are back to where I started.  In June of 2013, I found out I was pregnant with baby E and I was already dreading the baby blues.  Instead of considering what I would do differently this time, I just assumed I would have to gut it out like I did after Lil' Ruthie's birth.

God had other plans for me.

I wasn't paying attention to the hints he was dropping.  I was so busy with baby D's adoption and then with baby D that I failed to notice.  God had been training EJ and I for this upcoming battle.

Our pastor had been preaching about anxiety and worry.  He had also been preaching about personal praise and worship.  I heard as much of those sermons as I could while parenting 5 little ones.  It never dawned on me that the lessons he was sharing would be useful to combat my postpartum blues.  I was already feeling defeated.  I just accepted that it would be the same.

Two days before E's birth EJ put on some music in our kitchen and then he went to take a shower.  All the kiddos were busy playing so it was just me.  Alone with the song.  It is called "Mercy Seat" by Travis Cottrell.  It is a beautiful song and the chorus is especially meaningful to me.


"I’m runnin', I’m runnin', I’m runnin' to the mercy seat
Where Jesus is calling, He said His grace would cover me
His blood will flow freely, It will provide the healing
I’m runnin' to the mercy seat, I’m runnin' to the mercy seat."

As the song played in the kitchen that morning, I dropped to my knees and let the tears stream down my face.  I pictured myself kneeling near Jesus being covered by him.  Sort of a place of protection from the storm I was about to enter.  To be honest, I was also crying because I felt sorry for myself.  Why does he allow it to happen to me?  

Still it did not dawn on me that God was showing me that I needed to seek him and stop trying to fix it with my own power.

EJ and I have been teaching our children to take their thoughts captive and practice Philipians 4:8.  "Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things."  We have been trying to allow these words to change our own behaviors as well.  

Again, it didn't dawn on me to try a different approach this time.  I was still planning to "just survive" the blues.

After baby E was born things were going very well.  

That is until the 2nd night in the hospital.  

Suddenly, the anxiety and sadness was all over me.  I was exhausted and in physical pain from the c-section.  Our hospital room went from feeling like a place of joy to a place of darkness.  I was sobbing, ringing my hands and pacing around the room.  I couldn't sleep for fear of what could happen to baby E.  

EJ tried to talk me into getting some sleep while he stayed awake and held E.  He was going to watch a movie on his laptop and use his ear buds to keep the room quiet.  I just couldn't do that.  If he was watching the movie then I felt alone and if it was quiet I could hear all the chaos in my own mind.  

I have never had the blues hit me while still at the hospital.  I was always home before it began.  I remember looking in the mirror at my puffy, tear stained face and thinking this was going to be the worst experience yet.  I felt paralyzed with fear of what was to come.  I can usually control the tears when people are around but this time I broke down in front of two different nurses.  I was so embarrassed.  This is my 6th child and I am in my thirties.  Surely I can keep it together.  They were both so compassionate.  Tears come to my eyes now as I think of their kindness to me.

One of my sweet friends, J, texted me at just the right time to see how I was doing.  I answered her honestly that I needed prayer as the blues were coming on hard and fast.  She said she had me covered.

When I spoke to my sis, Rock Star, that night I told her the same thing.  She sent a prayer over text.  I think the Holy Spirit must have given her those words.  It was beautiful, truth filled and encouraging.  I replied back to her..."May it be true." 

Back to that night, I looked at EJ with wild, tired eyes and told him that I needed all the lights on and I wanted him to stay right next to me.  He rearranged our room so that he could scoot his bed right next to mine.  I just kept saying, "I don't know what to do."

Ironically, I knew exactly what to do.  The Lord had been preparing both of us for some time.

The next thing I knew, EJ was reading scripture over me.  I snuggled baby E in my arms and closed my eyes.  I repeated the words he was saying in a whisper.  Peace came over me and I was able to rest for a few hours before E needed to eat again.

The next day I felt a little relief but I was still fighting it.  We had a busy day.  We were released from the hospital and got to head home.  We were so excited to see the children and be together again.  I was worried about how my tears were going to affect the children as I worked through the first two weeks.  I just hoped I could mask it well.

That first night we got the older five into bed and Grammy, EJ and I sat up in the living room to visit while I fed baby E.  It was night time and I was anticipating how awful it was going to be.  EJ and I shared with Grammy about the night at the hospital and we talked through ways to make this two weeks easier.  Through tears, I shared about that morning in the kitchen listening to the song and crying out to God.  EJ played the song again so we could share it with Grammy.  As the song played, I closed my eyes and let the tears fall but it was different this time.  I didn't feel the darkness.  I felt freedom.  Something changed in that moment.

At bedtime I snuggled up with baby E and listened as EJ read the word over me.  I fell asleep to him praying over us.  The next day I made sure to spend time in personal worship as well as play praise music during the day.  When I started to feel the darkness coming on  I would run to Jesus in prayer.  Then I would start humming a song of worship.  I was also very careful about what media I allowed into my mind.

Baby E is now two and half weeks and I am FREE!  I am still relying heavily on the Lord to get me through each sleep deprived day of parenting six children.  But I am free from the darkness.

If I am ever granted the privilege of carrying another baby in my womb I will not be afraid of the postpartum blues.  I will walk in victory trusting that my God will be near me in the battle.

So now you know, the only reason I can wear my wonder woman apron.  God is so good to give me everything I need to not just survive this season of life but enjoy it and walk in victory!


To my children: I never want to hide from you.  The word says that in this life we will have trouble.  I would be so sad if I gave you the impression through photographs and my blog that everything in my life was always fantastic.  I am choosing to focus on the blessings and not the negative things.  However, there is a time and a place for sharing struggle.  I hope my writing will be an encouragement to you and your children long after I am gone.  I love you.  Hold tight to God always.  Allow his word to transform you and as always, "Praise God from whom all blessings flow."

a beautiful birth day

The day began way too early.  We left the house at 4:30am.  My C-section was scheduled for 7:30am.  I prefer the early morning surgery time so I don't have to be hungry all day.

As we prepared for baby E's birth EJ read his bible.  He got a text from one of his friends with this passage from Psalm.  What a blessing to read those words right before we welcomed child number six.


I asked Pop and Grammy to join us early that morning to pray over me before I left for the surgery.  The day started out pretty rough with 4 attempts to place my IV.  I was feeling pretty shaken.



I also asked my sis, Rock Star, to come early to capture our time in photographs.  I am so glad she did.  It is such a blessing to have these memories documented.  In the photo below Pop is praying over me while Grammy and I talk.  Later Pop whispered in my ear, "We trust God with you."  I needed to hear that.  He could see that I was feeling anxious and that encouragement was precious to me.



This man is a rock.  He has calmly walked me through so many of life's big moments.  Look at him put on those scrubs like a pro.








He is also funny and he keeps me laughing.  When you are about to be "gutted like a fish" (as my cousin Mrs. Okie says) it's good to laugh a little.

Baby E is here safe and sound!

Welcome to the world sweet baby boy!

Here he is in the hands of our favorite Dr. K.  
(Baby E is grand baby number 8 that Dr. K. has delivered for my folks) 


Tears of joy as I snuggle him.  I got to hold him a long time right there on the operating table.  I loved the chance to begin bonding right away.  I even got the opportunity to sing the doxology over him as a praise to God while they wheeled me out of surgery.

"Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise him above ye heavenly hosts.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Amen."

Daddy is over the moon with love for him!

I love this picture.  I have to lay flat for some time after the surgery so I don't throw up.  Glamorous, right?  Thankfully, this c-section was the first (out of four) that I did not throw up.  I was so thankful.

These moments are hard for me to really see laying on my back.  I love seeing everyone admiring baby E in this photograph.

Pop and Grammy are always excited to welcome a new grandbaby.  He is number 15 for them and the 10th boy.  Wow!  What an incredible heritage.

Papa and Grandma had been watching the older 5 kids all day.  It was their turn to love on baby E.  They always say they got a great return on their investment.  They had one child and so far have 6 grandbabies.  I love that attitude.  They blessed me that day and often by caring for the children.

Aunt DW will be here soon from out of state.  She is anxious to get her hands on this new little nephew.

The moment in time

It is a moment in time.

It is that moment right before your life changes forever.

I remember feeling it the night before we got married.

I remember feeling it before each of our children were born.

I am on the brink of it once again.
We will meet our sweet son in the morning.

Our 6th child.

No, it never becomes old hat.

He is a new creation.

Created by our God in His image.

Created with a purpose.

Gifted to us.

The reality of the gift is heavy on me today.

I do not deserve it.

I am so grateful.

The tears just flow and flow as I feel him move around in my tummy.

Father,
Thank you for this blessing!  Please give me all that I need to be his Mommy.  Allow me to always be mindful of the privilege it is to raise him.  I ask that you would give me your eyes to see all my children.  Allow my words to be loving even when I am tired and weary.  You have carried me this far and I know that you will strengthen me as I meet their needs.  Thank you Lord.  Thank you for this sacred time.

38 Weeks

Another week has come and gone.
 
The to-do list is dwindling down.
 
Just a few more things to accomplish before he arrives.
 
We have had a 9 year relationship with our OB, Dr. K.  He is amazing and I am so grateful that he will be doing my C-section.  I have been blessed to have him there for all of our biological births.  He has a wonderful sense of humor.  He and EJ love to joke around during our appointments.
 
Today, EJ had an idea...
 
EJ to Dr. K: "So, what do you say I scrub in and help deliver this baby?"
 
Dr. K to EJ: "Hmmm...well, that would be unprecedented."
 
Me to both of them: "NO.  NO.  That is not happening."
 
When I texted my family to give them the "Baby E update" I passed along this picture and information...
"EJ asked Dr. K if he could scrub in and help with the C-section.  You know, help pull the baby out.  I told them both I would kill them dead.  If anyone sees EJ trying to sneak into the doc's scrub room, hit him...hard."
 
The responses:
"No."
"I am prepared to take him down."
"Oh the horror."
"I have full confidence that even with an epidural you can handle the situation."
 
We laughed our heads off reading their responses at lunch.

Just a little emotional

I seem to be VERY teary lately.

I never really know what is going to set off the bucket of tears.

I was doing school with the boys last week.

We were reading about Abraham Lincoln's life as a child.

I didn't realize that Lincoln's mother had passed away when he was a boy.

Just that fact alone was almost more than I could bear.

Then I read about how his father remarried and his step mother was very good to him.

She was quoted as saying, "Abe never gave me a cross word or look.  He never refused to do anything I asked him.  Abe was the best boy I ever saw!"

And I lost it.

Not just a sniffle or a lump in the throat.

I started to boo hoo.

The boys just looked at me. 

"I'm sorry fellas." I said.

When I collected myself I said, "Remember I told you that sometimes when a Mommy has a baby in her tummy she cries easily?"

"Yes, we remember." they said.

Then we went on with our reading.

I am looking forward to getting back to my normal hormone levels!

37 weeks

Baby E continues to make his presence known.  This baby belly is large and in charge.  I know a lot of women hate this last trimester of pregnancy but I never feel more beautiful.  Don't get me wrong, there are aches and pains and some pretty major inconveniences but overall I love it.
 
I am beginning to make a real dent in my to do list.  This type A momma likes to mark things off her list!  I finished my Daily Schedules and got them posted on the fridge.  As I started to tape them on I told EJ I should have laminated them.  He reminded me that he bought me a laminator and it was in the basement.  Next thing I knew we had laminated lists on the fridge.  Oh the joy!  EJ and I high fived in the kitchen.  He totally understands my desire to be organized.
 
The daily schedules will help the grandparents to keep the day moving for our 5 older blessings while I heal from a C-section and bond with the newest baby brother.  I also made a list of daily chores to accomplish so that the house can stay in order.  In my post partum state of mind I won't be able to think about what needs to be done next.  Let alone verbalize it.  There is also a list on the side of the fridge of the 15 freezer meals I have prepared.

Second Dinner

One of my favorite episodes of the series "The Office" is the one where Pam goes into labor with her first child.  During her pregnancy, she and Kevin are constantly eating together.

Here is a quote from Kevin: "Pregnant Pam and I, we get hungry at the same times so we've been eating together a lot.  Not all meals.  Just, second breakfast, lunch, second lunch and first dinner."

I can totally relate to this!  Especially at this stage of pregnancy.  There is just no room in my stomach for a full meal.  That means I eat less per meal but more often during the day.  Much more often.

EJ knows that I won't make it from dinner time to bed time without having "second dinner."  He teases me a bit, but make no mistake about it, he loves to join me for second dinner!

He was working late a lot last week.  He kept coming home after the kids were in bed.  One night, when he came through the door, he could see that I had an empty plate sitting next to me. 

"Oh no!  I missed second dinner!" He said.

"A pregnant woman's "second dinner" waits for no one!" I replied.

A nesting state of mind

The countdown is on.

Baby E is coming.

I am a nesting fool.

My to do list does not stand a chance.

Recently, EJ and I needed to make two large purchases...

A chest of drawers and a rug.

I don't have time to mess around.

These are things that need to be accomplished before this Momma is sitting in a chair for 8 plus hours per day nursing a baby. Not to mention the hours snuggling his big (but still a baby) brother.  Not to mention meeting the needs of 4 other children in the house.  Did I mention that we also home school?  Anyway, I need to move on with the story before a panic attack comes on.

So, we headed out to find and make these purchases.  I was decisive.  None of this looking around forever.  These will work.  Done.  Off my to do list. 

As we drove home, EJ said, "Wow.  I wish I could keep you in a nine month pregnant state of mind all the time.  You are so decisive!"

35 weeks

 
35 weeks of growing baby E!
 
The weeks are passing a little too fast.  I am working hard on my to do list.
 
I have been singing a silly song to the kiddos about my list.
 
"I'm making a list, checking it twice.
Baby E is coming if I'm ready or not."
 
Then they all chime in...
 
"Baby E is coming to town!!!!"
 
(Only we say his name since we don't actually live in blog land).
 
E's movements are getting bigger and stronger every day.
 
He regularly decides that he is going to stretch his little body out from head to toe.
 
The problem is that there is not enough room left in my tummy for that kind of movement.
 
It takes my breath away when he does that.
 
When I am uncomfortable, I remind myself that he is strong and healthy so it is a good thing!

The new stroller is...

AMAZING!
 
 
We took it for a spin at the zoo today.  It is SO easy to push I could even maneuver it around while 9 months pregnant and with a cup of coffee in my hand.
 
Now that is a good stroller!
 
Miss Ruthie liked her view and baby D seemed content as long as we were moving.
 
Q is a bit jealous that he is officially too big for the stroller.  That little man always loved to ride.  Technically the stroller can handle him but we know he needs to work on his big boy skills.
 
We are a family that is used to getting looks when we are out and about for various reasons.  Sometimes it is the sheer number of little ones.  Sometimes it is the different colors of our skin.  Sometimes it is the bottle I use for baby D or the baby wrap I wear him in.  Sometimes it is my huge pregnant belly.  Today we added the totally amazing triple stroller.  We were the complete package.  I may need to have a pamphlet made to hand out addressing these various questions.  Hee hee.  You all know I actually love talking to people.

Mustard

My biggest pregnancy craving this time around is mustard.
 
I am out of control with it.
 
I am guessing I will not want to touch the stuff after this little man arrives.
 
What in the world am I missing in my diet that I crave mustard?

33 weeks (almost)

 

 
In just a few days I will be 33 weeks pregnant with baby E. 
 
I am sort of shocked when I see pictures of myself.  I know that he is growing big but the sight of my belly still surprises me. 
 
When I was 6 weeks pregnant with Miss Ruthie, the boys and I were in a car accident.  I kept meaning to go to the chiropractor after that but I never did.
 
A couple of months ago I had some neck and back pain that was more than I could handle.  I could hardly hold baby D to feed him.
 
I was so thankful when I made it to the chiropractor.  After some regular appointments with him, I am a believer.  It took about 3 adjustments for the pain to be gone.  After that, I continued to attend appointments to keep up with my changing pregnant body.
 
If I had only known that I could feel this good in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy I would have made chiropractic adjustments a priority in my previous pregnancies.  I cannot believe what a difference these appointments have made!
 
Also, I am busy mothering a 3 1/2 month old baby.  That is an exhausting thing to do when you are not pregnant let alone when you are in your 3rd trimester.  God has blessed us so much with a baby boy who loves to sleep!  It took me a little while to figure out his preferred schedule by watching his cues very closely.  Now he is a predictable and happy little man.  He eats well and sleeps hard.  I have no doubt that baby D's love of sleep is a good and perfect gift from God!  We have had enough babies to know that they don't all sleep so well.  At this point, he only wakes once in the very early morning, eats and then goes back to sleep.
 
Miss Ruthie has an amazing vocabulary for a 1 year old toddler.  Her ability to communicate with me cuts down on the crying and whining that I was used to when my little ones were that age.  She is such a big girl these days and we love watching her play the role of big sister to baby D and soon to baby E.
 
B is 8, W is 6 and Q is just days away from being 4.  These are our big guys and they are just plain awesome!  B & W are the only ones in school at this point.  They are a joy to teach and we love watching them learn.  Mr. Q is doing a little preschool learning here and there but nothing formal until next year.  He still takes a nap in the afternoons and he needs that rest because he plays hard!
 
Our days are busy but they are good!  We have been reminded by many friends that "these are the days" we will talk about for years to come.  When all the children were young and we were growing our family.  When I have a tough day I try to remember this.  It is a precious time for sure.
 
I know that the addition of baby E will create some temporary chaos.  A new baby always does.  I will need to remind myself that it will become our new normal and things will all fall into place once again.
 
I am so grateful to God for a healthy pregnancy and for the energy to meet the needs of all our little blessings.
